Step by Step

Here are my first postings as I began the job
Tues. Nov. 27, 2001

Here's something I'd like to try.

An idea I've been toying with is to show the stages of a job. I've always liked that
step-by-step stuff. It's something I've wanted to do on my new website (in progress!!!) but I
thought I'd try it here on the Wise to see if anyone is interested. The cool thing is this is
going to happen somewhat in real time. What I mean is I just got this job Monday 12:00
noon - the roughs are due Tues. morning and the client needs the finished in his hands
Thurs. morning. yep - you guessed it.. It's a newspaper job - deadlines from hell.

So if I crash and burn and the client hates everything I do. You get to see it! (Oh-boy.. much
wringing of hands)

So here we go.

So the job is for a well known National Paper - okay it's the Globe and Mail - the heck with the confidentiality.

It's a primo one - The Cover of the Book Review Insert. Full Colour and its big. 10.5 inches by 11 inches printed size.

Yep - I'm excited. Its the Annual Children's Book Review and the theme is Fantasy (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc.) The good news is I know the Art Director really well and he trusts me a lot - too much actually. I'm given the above information and that's it - no manuscripts just told to do something to do with Fantasy and books and in a comic book style.

- I'm really excited and then he tells me the deadline - okay who needs sleep anyway.

So 12:30 pm I start writing down ideas and tiny sketches. Its a way of thinking on paper I guess. I have to come up with a concept fairly fast so I can spend a lot of time on the layout and drawings.
